Many thanks!

October 26, 2010

InsideConnector’s national launch at the ERE Fall Expo this week (October 26-28, 2010) has led me to reflect on the significant impact that so many people have made during our nearly four year journey.  Some people have known they were contributing thoughts, feedback, or encouragement that would become part of a commercial product and others contributed unknowingly as they made presentations at conferences, wrote tweets and blog posts, or shared their thoughts in other public forums.  I am grateful beyond words to the incredible community that I’m a part of and I want to recognize several people.

Thank you to:

Rob McIntosh – A conversation with Rob in 2006 sparked my curiosity around the incredible gains in productivity that could result from improving front-end response rates from candidates/prospects.  Since then, Rob and I have exchanged many thoughts and opinions on this topic and I appreciate his willingness to share so generously.  It’s safe to say InsideConnector would not exist today without Rob’s influence (many, many thanks).

Michael Marlatt – I have known Michael since 2006, but in September of 2008 he made a breakthrough presentation to a national audience at SourceCon.  Among the topics he covered were social media’s “walled gardens” and the “social media fatigue” that results from having to create a new profile for each social network.  Based on his insights, we worked hard to build a system that avoided both of those pitfalls.  I call on Michael often because of his strength in design, his understanding of human nature, and his knowledge of technology.

Ben Gotkin – At ERE’s Spring Expo in March 2009, Ben gave a powerful presentation entitled “Integrating Social Media and Web 2.0 into your Recruitment Marketing Strategy”.  While most companies were still struggling to wrap their minds around the notion of social recruiting (this was prior to the first Social Recruiting Summit), Ben whiteboarded an entire Social Media/Web 2.0 recruiting strategy live on stage.  He completely delivered on his promise of demonstrating a totally integrated approach.

Eric Jaquith – I have not found the limits of Eric’s knowledge on any subject for which I have sought advice.  His replies are never “off the cuff” – - they always come from personal experience and having deeply explored topics that most people don’t even know exist.  Whether it’s general business advice, marketing & branding, video integration, information security, tool & widgets, or scores of other topics where I have asked for help, he always exceeds my expectations and expands my thinking.  He has also made many valuable introductions (including introducing me to Doug Berg and Jason Davis).

Marvin Smith – Marvin is one of our industry’s greatest innovators around the concept of nurturing relationships by building Talent Communities.  His public writings & presentations, and our private conversations have significantly shaped InsideConnector.  I have called on him many times during the design and development and he always offers valuable insights.

Jenny DeVaughn – Every day, Jenny shows what the term “pay it forward” means.  She took an interest in InsideConnector from the start.  I am thankful for her wise advice on a broad range of topics and for her willingness to make countless introductions.

Jonathan Rosenberg – I met Jonathan at ERE’s 2008 Spring Expo and was impressed with the approach he uses at ConocoPhilips.  We stayed in touch and Jonathan helped shape our original prototype and encouraged us to build a production version.  He has been involved in the development from the beginning and is greatly appreciated.

John Sumser – A chance meeting at ERE’s Spring Expo 2010 led to some very pointed questions from John.  He challenged us to refine our approach and our message.  John’s instincts and his knowledge of HR & Recruiting Technology have led to a better product.

Kevin Wheeler – I never miss a chance to talk with Kevin, hear his presentations, or read his thoughts on global talent trends.  Kevin’s views have helped to expose the gaps that we seek to fill with InsideConnector.  Some of the most important articles include:
- “Why Recruiting Has to Go Video” http://www.ere.net/2009/08/14/why-recruiting-has-to-go-video/
- “Beyond Talent Pools: Building Dynamic Communities” http://www.ere.net/2010/06/10/beyond-talent-pools-building-dynamic-communities/

Susan Burns – Susan and I already knew each other, but in the summer of 2009, she unknowingly gave the final nudge that led us to build InsideConnector.  She served as the chairperson of the inaugural Social Recruiting Summit held at the Googleplex in June 2009.  Prior to the event, Susan sent a questionnaire to everyone who registered.  The final question was “if budget was not an issue, what social recruiting tool would you build”?  Pondering the question was the final encouragement we needed to begin development.

Dr. John Sullivan – For several years, I’ve learned from John through his articles and presentations.  By chance, we sat next to each other during Marvin Smith’s terrific presentation on Talent Communities at ERE’s Spring 2009 Expo.  After the presentation we struck up a fascinating conversation about the need for more personalization in our interaction with candidates and ways that “old school” recruiting practices could be combined with current technology to dramatically improve each candidate’s experience.  John was interested in our prototype and continues to offer valuable insights.

Doug Berg – Doug is one of the most innovative minds in digital marketing.  On countless occasions, he has generously answered my questions on a wide range of topics from technology to building a company.  His company, Jobs2Web, serves as a model of what we hope to achieve.

Jason Davis – Eric Jaquith introduced me to Jason at the inaugural Social Recruiting Summit in June 2009.  Jason gave valuable advice on domain names and community building.

David Manaster, ERE Media, and the ERE Community - I am grateful to David, ERE Media, and the ERE Community.  Through its conferences, websites, and publications, ERE has created an environment where people from around the globe can learn from each other and exchange ideas.  Because of ERE, I have met some of the brightest people in our industry.
